Sunset Cliffs at Golden Hour: A Photographer’s Guide

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, at the southern tip of Ocean Beach, is the spot locals actually go to watch the sun go down — less crowded than the beaches further north, and the cliff-top vantage makes for a better view than sand level.

Best Viewpoints

  • The main overlook near Ladera Street — the most popular spot, with the widest unobstructed horizon.
  • Sunset Cliffs Blvd, further south near Adair Street — quieter, with sea cave views below.
  • Point Loma Nazarene University bluffs (public access trail) — a longer walk but fewer people.

When to Go

Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before actual sunset to get a parking spot and claim a viewing spot — this location gets genuinely crowded on clear evenings, especially in summer.

Safety Notes

The cliffs are actively eroding sandstone — stay behind railings and posted signage. Every year there are injuries from people climbing past barriers for photos; it’s not worth it.

Pair It With

  • Ocean Beach Pier, a few minutes north, for a walk over the water
  • Newport Avenue in OB for dinner — a laid-back strip of restaurants and bars with a beach-town feel very different from La Jolla or downtown

Local Tip

Check a sunset time app the day of your visit — San Diego’s sunset shifts by nearly two hours between June and December, so “sunset at 7” is only true part of the year.

Getting There

Sunset Cliffs is about 20 minutes from Serra Mesa via I-8 West and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
