Old Town San Diego: History and Food in One Stop
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park marks the site of California’s first Spanish settlement — a compact, walkable district of preserved 1800s buildings, museums, and, notably, some of the city’s most beloved Mexican restaurants.
What to See
- Old Town San Diego State Historic Park — free to walk through, with restored adobe buildings, a working blacksmith shop, and museum exhibits on the city’s early history.
- Whaley House — one of the most-visited “haunted” houses in the country, and a genuinely well-preserved 1850s home regardless of whether you buy the ghost stories.
- Fiesta de Reyes — a courtyard of shops and restaurants inside the park, built around a central plaza.
Where to Eat
Old Town has one of the highest concentrations of long-running Mexican restaurants in San Diego — several family-owned spots have operated here for decades. Expect margaritas, mariachi on weekends, and larger portions than you’ll find downtown.
How Much Time to Plan
The historic park itself takes 1 to 2 hours to walk through properly. Add another hour if you want a sit-down meal, which most visitors do.
Local Tip
Old Town gets crowded with tour groups midday — an early visit (before 11am) gives you a quieter walk through the park before lunch.
Getting There
Old Town is about 10 minutes from Serra Mesa via Highway 163 — one of the closer attractions to GemNest’s Serra Mesa rentals.
